Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel Unveils honour to Long-Standing Employee
The Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel has unveiled a tribute mural, ‘Paul’s Wall’, to showcase the memories, contribution and history of long-serving and much-loved employee Paul Costello.
On Monday 21st December 1970, Paul Costello started his first shift at the then Hotel Piccadilly as a Page Boy. Paul soon became an integral part of the team and rose through the ranks after many years of loyal service, 47 this coming December, to become one of the longest serving employees in the hotel’s history. Today Paul stands as Head Concierge and welcomes new and returning guests through the door every day.
Paul often treats visitors and staff to tales of times gone by, including the famous guests he’s met and the various transformations the hotel has gone through over the years. Staff at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly decided to do something special to commemorate Paul, his career and the amazing people he has met. After the hotel’s board sat down to look through Paul’s bursting portfolio of keepsakes, autographs and literature spanning a lifetime, Paul’s Wall soon came to life.
Paul’s Wall, is a collection of images and stories including celebrity guests Les & Tracey Dawson, Tom Jones, Tommy Cooper, and Sir Norman Wisdom to name a few, as well as brochures from times gone by. Paul’s Wall celebrates both Paul’s Costello’s career and Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel’s history.
Paul Costello, Head Concierge at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly, said at the unveiling“ I’m truly honoured and touched that my colleagues would do something so special for me. Working at the hotel has been a huge part of my life, there are so many memories, moments and amazing people that I’ll always treasure but to see it all up on the wall makes me so incredibly proud, I feel like a celebrity”.
Steve Dunford, General Manager of the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly commented “Paul Costello, whether he likes it or not, is the heart of this hotel. He has served the test of time in what can be a challenging and ever-changing environment, and he stands as proud today as he did all of those years ago as a 15-year-old lad. We wanted to do something special for him and to provide our guests with a visual history of the hotel. Paul may well become a Manchester tourist attraction himself”.
